Access the Quirimbas Archipelago National Park through this international airport town. Many of the islands are uninhabited, but the underwaters and deserted beaches make for a wonderful pristine destination.
The city of Pemba is renowned for the Portuguese colonial architecture, and makonde art carvings. The southern area of Murrebue is a very popular kite-surfing destination during the months of October – March each year. Scuba diving and deep sea fishing are also very popular activities that can be arranged with the various accommodation options in Pemba. There are some wonderful wellness centres and spa’s to relax and soak up the dazzling views of the bay, as well as horse riding on the beach!
Only 11 (out of the total of 32 islands) islands in the archipelago form park of the park. The archipelago stretches all the way to the Tanzanian border. Two of the most popular islands within the park are Ibo Island and Quilálea Island. Explore the architectural ruins on Ibo Island, and visit the fort, watching the silversmiths create masterpieces – a visit to this island is a photographers dream!
Moving further north, there are only two other inhabited islands, Medjumbe and Vamizi – these are private islands and provide a truly magical and luxurious stay on islands that boast magnificently beautiful beaches and pristine coral reefs.
