Patrick Simkin
The idea for Manda Wilderness was first discussed in 1994 by two of the current investors, Paul and Patrick Simkin. The following four years were then used to gain essential experience in international development and training in conservation and lodge management. Meanwhile, time was spent searching for a suitable area, raising the finance necessary and planning the project.
In 1998, Patrick Simkin began assessing the shores of Lake Niassa for a location, following the recommendations of another of the current investors - Lola Castro - who had been working in Niassa during the repatriation of refugees and remembered both its beauty and tourism potential. It was at this time that Mchenga Nkwichi Beach was found. Excited about the tourism potential of this pristine spot, the investors began regular visits to the area in order to meet local communities and the Provincial Government, to gain their trust and wholehearted support for the project. Through this process, Manda Wilderness was born.
Further, like-minded, investors were encouraged to join the adventure of establishing a company and a project in northern Mozambique. All the investors in Manda Wilderness (there are six in total) have lived and worked in remotes parts of Africa and all have a passion for the continent, its' people and its' scenery.
