Nacala boasts one of the biggest ports in Mozambique and is the deepest natural post on the east coast of Africa, however this is not what attracts the many tourists to this area.
One of the biggest attractions to this area is the UNESCO World Heritage island, Mozambique Island (lha de Moçambique), which used to be the capital of the country prior to 1898 – in fact the country of Mozambique received its name from this island (not the other way around). The island is rich with history and culture, and a walking / bicycle tour around the island will get you meeting the friendly and colorfully-dressed islanders, and taking in all the stories and photographing the wonderful Stonetown architecture and fort ruins. Spending a night on the island allows you to enjoy the vibrant nightlife and restaurants, an experience not to be missed!
The other wonderful attraction in this area is the pristine and remote beaches and coral reefs where you are able to kick back and relax and work on your suntan, or explore the underwater wonderlands beneath the blue, or even better …. A combination of both. Diving in this area is all about unbelievable coral and smaller fish and nudibranch’s. This area boasts both an eco and a luxury lodge, depending on your fancy.
This area also combines really well with a pre or post safari at Gorongosa National Park.More information Request
