Lake Niassa – Lake Malawi

  • Do you prefer the feel of freshwater swimming, rather than salt water?
  • Laying in the banks of the 3rd largest lake in Africa, that is so large that you cannot see the other side, and has the feeling of being on the ocean with white powdery sand between your toes?
  • Exploring an award-winning, remote “robinson crusoe” lodge on the ‘wild’ side of the lake, followed by a couple nights of luxurious pampering on an island in the middle of the lake?
  • Would it interest you to hike (or canoe) to the nearest village, or visit the chapel, immersing yourself in the culture of two countries within the space of a week?

If you have answered yes to most of the above, then this Mozambican itinerary is for you!!

Day 1-6

(5 nights)

After arriving off your international flight into Lilongwe international airport, you make your way to the Ulendo Airlink counter to catch your scenic flight into Likoma island. On arrival at Likoma island, you are met by the Nkwichi team, that walk you (a short distance) from the airstrip to the beach to board your boat to cross over the lake to the, wilder, Mozambique side. Roll up your trousers and disembark at the sleepy village of Cobue along the way to clear immigrations into Mozambique, and then a short trip onto the lodge! The voyage across the lake is worth the visit …. and also part of the adventure!

Spend the next 5 nights enjoying the remote, natural environment of Nkwichi Lodge. Each chalet was designed to be as open as possible to be able to experience this wilderness as it should be … naturally! Enjoy open air bathrooms (with hot and cold water) with both baths and showers – whichever you prefer. You could even spend a night in the Star bed, if you would like? Days are spend swimming, snorkeling, canoeing and hiking the wilderness. Nights are spend around bon fires on the beach or enjoying a more private dining experience – your stay at Nkwichi can be tailor-made to suit your requirements!

Day 6-8

(2 nights)

After breakfast, as you wave goodbye to the Nkwichi team, you get back into the boat and head back to Cobue to check out of Mozambique again, and make the journey across the lake to Kaya Mawa. You will need to make a short stop along the way for another immigrations check in (back into Malawi), then arrive at the luxurious Kaya Mawa in time for lunch!

The next two nights are spent exploring the bustling village of Likoma island, exploring markets and visiting the chapel or alternatively spend your days relaxing in your dreamy chalet, enjoying a spa treatment, or partaking in some of the motorized activities and diving!

Day 8

It’s time to say farewell to the Kaya Mawa team and head back to Lilongwe to catch your international flight! Kaya Mawa take you back to the airstrip and on your flight back to Lilongwe, with Ulendo Airlink!
