Ibo island lodge map

Imagine a remote Mozambican island lost in time, all but forgotten to the outside world for nearly a century.   Recline high on a roof top terrace overlooking impossibly blue ocean and track the slow and steady traditional sailing dhows that drift across the horizon.  Be whisked to an idyllic sandbank beach and dive some of Africa’s richest coral reefs.  Snorkel, sea kayak, swim, fish, sail, massage and relax.   Snack on cashew nuts, tropical fruit and the freshest of seafood of every description.  Picture an island with grand and majestic architecture some lovingly restored to their former glory and others fallen into crumbling, marvelous ruin with twisted fig roots that have all but taken over.

This place is Ibo Island, or as the locals call it: Ilha do Ibo. Situated on the Indian Ocean island of Ibo Island just 71 nm from mainland Pemba City, northern Mozambique.  Ibo Island has been described as one of the most unique and magical islands in the world and is the perfect place to explore the beaches and beauty of the Quirimbas Archipelago and National Park in Northern Mozambique. Nominated for World Heritage status, Ibo is an island that is still remote and relatively untouched by commercial developments and one of the most fascinating, unique islands in Africa. Ibo Island Lodge is the only luxury lodge on the island and is award nominated and unique.  It has been described as one of the most magical and atmospheric lodges in Africa. Located on the prime waterfront site, the lodge encompasses magnificent mansions each over one hundred years old with walls over a meter thick and lofty high ceilings.

Some rooms are sea facing, and some are garden facing.  All rooms are individually designed and unique. The wide verandas are furnished with hand crafted furniture and soft cushions. All rooms are air- conditioned and also have ceiling fans. The lodge has two swimming pools set in tropical gardens, an air-conditioned lounge and private dining room as well as a roof terrace restaurant with an open-air lounge area for after dinner drinks under the stars.

The restaurant and bar is situated on the roof terrace of the Bela Vista mansion facing west for unforgettable sunsets and affording spectacular views over the bay. Cuisine combines Mozambican and world inspired influences with surf-fresh seafood platters, smoked sail fish, coconut and chilli traditional Ibo Island crab curry, crunchy green pawpaw and ginger prawn salad and everyone’s classical favourite creamy lobster thermidor being just some of the highlights on the menu  Romantic and private dinners are served in a number of locations, or on the rooftop terrace with awesome views over the ocean.

Guests partake in a multitude of experiences: beach, sail, swim or fish. Become immersed in the unchanged, ancient culture of Ibo and the rare chance to interact with wonderfully hospitable islanders, or simply relax, refresh the senses and soak up the romantic atmosphere. Special activities will enable guests to immerse themselves in the unchanged, ancient culture of Ibo and the rare chance to interact with the wonderfully hospitable islanders.
