Probably one of the most well known tourism areas of Mozambique, Vilankulo provides the perfect gateway to the Bazaruto Archipelago National Park.
This archipelago is much smaller than the Quirimbas Archipelago of the north, with only 6 islands within the protected area. The most popular of the islands are Bazaruto and Benguerra islands, which both have resorts providing fantastic accommodation and activities, including scuba diving, deep-sea fishing, horse riding and spas.
The mainland town of Vilankulo is a busy little village that caters for all types of tourists – everything from the backpacker to the most luxurious of hotels. There are many different shops, markets and restaurants that one can visit to be able to immerse in the cultural and artistic aspects of the town. Even if one is headed for the islands, a night or two in Vilankulo is a wonderful addition to the natural spectacles of island life.
All the activities that are available on islands (and more) are also available with specialized operators in Vilankulo. These include diving, fishing, island day trips, spa treatments and horse riding. September is the annual Vilankulo Downwind kitesurfing competition which makes it a very festive, albeit windy, time of the year to visit. If you have ever wanted to learn how to kitesurf in paradise, this is the town to do it!
Do not forget about the Vilanculos Coastal Wildlife Sanctuary where you can find various species of antelope and even giraffe on the peninsula, on the southern end of the archipelago.
This would work as a wonderful beach addition to your Gorongosa safari.More information Request
